2 questions- help me out

Ok, so I have 2 questions.

Ive got an 03 wrx (non sti) all factory w/ all factory options (boost gauge, skirts, wing, etc)

Anyway, I got a really good deal on an SPT intake w/ a heat shield. Around 100$. From some advice I got locally, I put it in. Mistake? I think so... Now I am being told that even though its SPT, etc, that it's going to destroy my MAS sooner than later and I am better off w/ stock intake until much farther down the road. Thoughts? Do I just put the stock intake back in, and if so, what mod/s are the best to begin with? I was under the impression that intake, exhaust, access port, and the like were all at the top of the list. Im a noob, so let me hear what you have to say,

Second, my wrx is only pushing about .08 boost according to the boost gauge, even when I hammer it. I was told locally that it should be pushing full boost (.14), so why is this happening? What causative factors are contributing to it not pushing full boost?

Would a new UP/DP help this?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can offer.

Derek

Re: 2 questions- help me out

it wont destroy the MAF but it will totally screw up your Air/Fuel mix and cause it to run lean = crap.

Re: 2 questions- help me out

Thanks.

I was under the impression that running lean would not happen w/ the SPT intake but I am gathering that it's (intake) something to do at a much later stage, rather than initial mod.

Guess the factory intake should go back in....

Re: 2 questions- help me out

I dunno man, I've had the SPT Intake in my car for the past 40K miles with no problems....I doubt that's the issue.  Subaru spent a lot of R+D on the SPT intake to make sure it was as close to the stock box's stability so I would look elsewhere for your problems.  As far the full boost thing guys, you most likely have a boost leak somewhere.

Re: 2 questions- help me out

Seems obvious but try a reset too.
Disconnect the negative terminal for 5 minutes then see what its like after 5 minutes of driving, and remember you wont push max boost in any gear other than 4th or 5th really

Re: 2 questions- help me out

smeghead- what seems obvious?

I just realized that there is a difference between the psi and the way subaru factory boost gauge displays. I am pushing .05-.08 on the factory boost gauge which from what I am reading now seems right because of the difference in conversion? It only ever pushed to .08 on the factory gauge, and I didnt think anything of it until recently.
So is that ok?

Also, I agree Scoobie, I don't see that the SPT definitley needs to come out, I guess I will give it a few more weeks and see. Do you have V2 tune and other stuff done to yours tho, I am concerned since the intake is the only thing I have done at this point..

One more thing, and I know this sounds dumb- Is it possible for the intake to make your car smell like ass? I don't know if the jackass that recently worked on my car stashed a few cigarette butts somewhere in the car or what, but it smells terrible, like an old hotel room. My wife thinks it's the intake, is that possible? lol

Thanks in advance a lot guys, let me know what you think.

Also, where can I get a cheap portv2?

For a cheap Accessport  V2 check NASIOC...you can usually catch'em going for around $450-500 used.  As far as why the car smells like ass, shouldn't be the intake unless the filter is very dirty and since you got it used that seems like a good question to ask.  If the intake is very dirty, you won't get enough air....not enough air will make the car run rich and smell like ass.  Are you getting a lot ofbackfire on acceleration?  Where is the smell?  Is it near the exhaust where you smell it or inside the actual vehicle?  If this smell is inside the vehicle then it could be your cabin air filter.  See this thread for reference:

Re: 2 questions- help me out

I also just saw this post somewhere as well
Just saw this on NASIOC and thought I would post this here for those that don't go there.

Quote:
Subaru has initiated a voluntary regional recall to replace specific engine fuel lines and hoses
on approximately 5,724 2002 and 2003MY Impreza WRX models registered in 16 “cold weather” states located in NOAA Climate Zone 1.

The affected states are:
Alaska, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York,
South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Campaign code WVK-21 has been assigned to this regional recall.
In extremely cold temperatures, a certain engine fuel line/hose may
temporarily seep some fuel during initial cold engine start up.
If this condition occurs, vehicle occupants may notice the smell of fuel.
To correct this condition, affected vehicles will require replacement of the engine fuel delivery
line and hose.
A special repair parts kit will be available in the near future.
The kit contains all parts needed to complete this repair.

Additionally, Subaru will follow up in early CY 2010 with letters to owners
that it will provide an extended 12 year/unlimited mileage warranty for this
condition to owners of affected vehicles located in the remaining 34 states.

General information concerning this Recall:
• Campaign Bulletin WVK-21 will be posted on the Techinfo.Subaru.com website during the week of December 7, 2009. The Bulletin will contain additional information concerning identification of affected vehicles, repair and claim submission procedures.

• Notification letters will be mailed to vehicle owners registered in the 16 affected states on or around December 16, 2009.

• VIN lists will be sent to dealers located in the affected 16 states on or around December 14, 2009.

• Information concerning repair parts availability will be released in the near future.
My 03 WRX has only had the raw fuel smell once or twice in the 6 years i have owned it. Once the general recall comes into effect I will see if I can get it repaired though.

Re: 2 questions- help me out

Thanks guys.

Ill look into the age/status of the intake filter and then replace the cabin filter if need be.

I am willing to bet the cabin filter needs to be replaced either way.

Is there a way by looking at or evaluating the intake filter if it needs to be replaced?

Yes, just physically look at it....the SPT intake filter should be blue in color and not be clogged with dirt.  If it is, buy a K+N filter recharge kit and clean that bitch out! smile

Re: 2 questions- help me out

The car might smell like ass cause a rat died in it. A tech showed me an engine bay full of rodent shit and the rat died in the engine so everytime the guy started the engine the rat cooked slowly.

Yes, you're wrong.
